Term vs. permanent life insurance
What each kind is for, what it costs, and why most families start with term.
Term life delivers a fixed death benefit over a set span—usually 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 years—for a flat premium. Coverage stops at term's end, or renews at much steeper rates. It's the most affordable way to get substantial protection during a family's critical years.
Permanent life (whole life, universal, and hybrids) stays active throughout your life and accumulates cash inside. Monthly costs are far higher for the same death benefit, with cash value building slowly at first. Pick it for permanent needs: caring for a dependent indefinitely, providing estate funds, or business succession.
How to choose
Start with need, not product type. If the need is temporary—a payoff mortgage, kids becoming independent—term lines up perfectly. If the need is permanent, permanent insurance or a term policy with conversion options fit better. Many carriers allow converting term to permanent at no new exam during a specified window; the quote tool shows each carrier's rules.
What people in Encinitas often do
A solid approach: buy a 20- or 30-year term sized to actual household debts and income needs, then reevaluate if circumstances shift. This keeps premiums manageable so you can buy what you truly need. Susman Insurance Agency can discuss permanent routes if lifelong coverage is important to you.
